Are river cruises family-friendly for school-aged kids? Yes, but not all river cruise lines are created equal. Here are the top three family-friendly river cruise lines in Europe.
Tauck Family River Cruises

Tauck Bridges is known for its top-notch, white glove service and exceptional family adventures. In Europe, Tauck Bridges river cruises sail along the Danube, Rhine, Rhône, Seine, and Douro Rivers. Tauck brings on an extra tour director specifically for the family-friendly cruises. Excursions are tailored for kids as well. For example families can indulge in a delicious chocolate tasting in Strasbourg, France combined with learning some French phrases and a fun sing-along with popular French songs. While onboard, there are a multitude of kid-friendly activities, including putt-putt golf on the top deck and historical scavenger hunts. Meals onboard include a variety of kid-friendly alternatives. The menu is designed knowing that not everybody is an adventurous eater. Tauck Bridges makes sure everybody in the family is entertained and discovers something new. As a side note, I was recently on Tauck's M.S. Grace and I was blown away by their food and entertainment on board.
AmaWaterways

AmaWaterways has connecting cabins on some of their ships, which is something rare. The picture on the right is me onboard AmaSofia in one of their connecting cabins. Do note that while there are connecting cabins onboard, there is no specific kids' programming. These cruises would be best for older children and/or going on a multigenerational cruise. Did you know that during the Easter Market cruises, there is an Easter Egg Hunt and if you leave your shoes outside your cabin door during a Christmas Market cruise, you might be in for a treat?
Adventures By Disney
Adventures By Disney charters some of the AmaWaterways's fleet for their family-friendly cruises. One of the many advantages of cruising with Adventures by Disney is their Adventure Guides. These guides travel with you and handle every logistical detail, including things you did not even know you needed. In true Disney fashion, they act as storytellers who bring the destinations to life for the kids. There might even be a magical surprise or two for the whole family.
As a note the minimum age for children onboard varies for each river and specific cruise line. While many of the river cruise lines do allow children, most lines do not have the connecting doors or any programming to help keep the kids entertained.
