European River Cruising Planning

I don't just book river cruises; I am physically on the ships vetting the experience for my travelers. River cruising is my favorite way to explore Europe because it allows you to see multiple countries in a relatively short time span while only having to unpack once. Whether I am inspecting the newest Longships on the Netherlands waterways or exploring the Danube, I provide the 'boots on the deck' perspective that you simply cannot find online.  Did you know the most popular river I am booking for 2026 travels is the Rhine river?

There are a lot of different river cruise brands out there. Matching the right ship and itinerary for the client is one of my favorite things to do. Here is a quick list of the European River Cruise Lines Markwood Magic books.

The Innovation Icons (Celebrity, AmaWaterways, Avalon)

  • AmaWaterways: Perfect for milestone celebrations and Christmas Markets. I love their twin-balcony concept for the best views

  • Avalon Waterways: Their Panorama Suites essentially turn your entire room into a balcony. Ideal for "Active & Discovery" travelers. I stayed onboard Avalon View.

  • Celebrity River Cruises: Celebrity is the new 'kid' on the block who starts sailing in 2027. The river cruise ships take inspiration from the Edge class ocean ships. I will be onboard Celebrity Roamer in 2028.

The Luxury Leaders (Riverside, Scenic, Tauck, Uniworld)

  • Uniworld & Riverside Luxury Cruises: For those who want a boutique, 5-star hotel feel. Ask me about the food on the Riverside Mozart it is the best food on the river.

  • Scenic & Tauck: The gold standard for luxury. Tauck is perfect for multigenerational families with the white glove service.

The Modern Explorers (Viking, Riviera, Emerald)

  • Riviera River Cruises: A fantastic choice for couples and solo travelers. I cruised onboared MS Geoffrey Chaucer  to see their latest excursion quality.

  • Viking River Cruises: The most recognized brand for a reason. I have cruised onboard Viking Ve. Their longships have prime docking spots. Ask me about the "Grand European" or "Paris to Normandy" routes.

  • Emerald, Amadeus: Great for a fresh, contemporary vibe. Emerald Luna was the first European river cruise I sailed on. It was on the Danube River.
