There is nothing more magical than waking up on a European river cruise, with historic castles, cathedrals, and terraced vineyards gliding past your window. The staterooms on the lowest passenger deck are often referred to in the industry as the "swan view," or as I affectionately call them, the "duck view” They are the lowest price point for cabins onboard, however they will come with wonderful amenities onboard the river cruise ship.
What Do the Top River Cruise Lines Call Their Lower Deck Cabins?
Avalon: Deluxe Stateroom
Viking: Standard Cabin
AmaWaterways: Category D & E: Fixed Window
Tauck: Category 1-3
Celebrity River Cruises: River View
Riverside Luxury Cruises: Harmony Suites

What Exactly is a "Swan View" Stateroom
Location onboard
These staterooms are located on Deck 1, the lowest passenger level The cabins on this deck are often split in to section. The section closest to the lobby is typically for guests onboard while the remaining cabins are for the crew making the cruise run smoothly. This deck is often where you can find the gym, salon, massage room, salt room, and other amenities depending on the cruise line and ship. Please note: Every luxury river cruise line offers different ship layouts. As your dedicated travel advisor, Markwood Magic will help you determine exactly which line, ship, and room type perfectly fits your vision.
The Windows
The cabins on this deck get the nickname swam view as the windows are just above the water line. The rest of the cabin is just below the water surface. For safety reasons, these high windows are permanently fixed and do not open. However, there are curtains so you can open to allow the light to come into the room or close it at night. Here is a picture when I was onboard Viking Ve.
The Setup
Most of the river cruise ships will have a ledge just below the window that you can store your belongings. It is a nice shelf as you can see from the picture above.

The one fantastic exception to the standard layout is onboard one of Tauck River cruise ships. I absolutely love their innovative "Loft" design, which features a raised seating area with a table and chairs right at window height.
The Amenities
Guests in swan view cabins enjoy the exact same five-star dining experiences, included shore excursions, and exceptional crew service as passengers in the highest-tier balcony suites. Do note that some of the higher categories room may have additional benefits such as a stocked mini fridge, butler service, or laundry included with their stay.
Is a Lower Deck Stateroom Right for You?
The answer is maybe. While I help every client find their perfect fit, these cabins are generally ideal for active travelers who view their room primarily as a cozy place to sleep and shower, preferring to spend their days in the lounge, on the sun deck, or exploring the ports. The lower level cabins could also be a great fit for those who prioritize value, don’t mind a slightly smaller bathroom, and do not need to have the fresh air come into their cabin. It may also be a good option if you are going on a European river cruise in colder weather such as the Christmas Markets or New Year’s Eve cruises.
When should you upgrade to a standard cabin or suite?
You want less noise in your cabin from the engine or thrusters.
You want to feel the breeze from the river.
You are going on a highly scenic sailing, like the Douro River or Rhine Gorge.
You are going on a river cruise for a milestone celebration.
There is really no ‘wrong cabin’ on a European river cabin, just the cabin that matches with your personal travel style and budget. Markwood Magic can help you figure out that perfect combination as part of booking your river cruise vacation. You can schedule time on my calendar here.
