This article will explore the main differences between a 3-star, 4-star, and 5star hotels/resorts.

3-Star Hotels – Examples: Holiday Inn Express and Courtyard by Marriott.

Three-star hotels are going to be the most economical. They are functional and comfortable for travelers. This is a good option if budget is a concern and you are only staying one night - think the night before a mass market cruise. The rooms are pretty basic and will meet your basic needs. There is usually a desk and toiletries are included for the bathroom. There may be dining on site or close to the hotel. There will not be any concierge desk or luxury perks like spa services. There may be a small gym to use.

4-Star Hotels – Examples: Loews and Kimpton. Four-star hotels are a step up in style, service & amenities. You may have more theming in the lobby, upscale decor in the room. There will typically be several dining options, a concierge to assist you, fitness centers, a pool, and more. Compared to the 3-star hotels, the rooms are larger and there is premium bedding. Rooms are typically more spacious with premium bedding. Some of the lobbies maybe have a pleasant scent. Room service is typically available as well. Just a note: If room service is ordered, be sure to tip.

5-Star Hotels – Examples: Four Seasons, Ritz-Carlton, St. Regis.

This is the ultimate luxury experience. Expect personalized service such a personalized tour of the hotel/resort and being accompanied do your room. Dining options are plentiful and may include Michelin-star dining. The interior designs are beautiful both in the public places and your room. The spas are a delight. Expect a larger room compared to a 4-star hotel and a beautiful bathroom as well. Expect fantastic service, valet parking. The guest experience is put at the top of the priority list when staying at a 5-star hotel. They are at the higher end when it comes to price.

Pro Tip: Star ratings aren’t always universal. Especially when it comes to Europe. A 4-star hotel in Europe might feel more like a 3.5-star in the U.S. (or vice versa). And not every hotel will come with A/C. This is why travelers need expert guidance because where you stay does make a big difference.

The choices for hotels and resorts can feel at times a bit overwhelming. This is where Markwood Magic comes in. The stress of finding the right resort paired with the perfect itinerary is what we are known for.
