River cruising is my favorite way to explore Europe and it has become increasingly popular among travelers. This is especially true for couples who are recently empty nesters. However, there are several myths about river cruising that I want to clear up as the river cruise could be a fantastic match for you.

Myth 1: River Cruises Are Only for Older Travelers

One common misconception is that river cruises cater exclusively to older travelers. That couldn't be farther from the truth. In fact, check out 50th birthday celebration river cruise article. Back to the age demographic. The average age for a river cruise really depends on the river cruise line. While it's true that river cruising is a relaxing and comfortable way to travel, it's also full of activities and excursions suitable for all ages. For example on walking tours there can be multiple options, depending on the walking speed of the travelers. Most lines have a gentle walkers group, but the faster walkers can go in their own group. Did you know that many cruise lines have bikes or ebikes onboard their ships? They are my favorite way to explore the cities and I highly suggest taking at least one bike or ebike tour if you are able. Cruise lines like Avalon offer Active and Discovery itineraries that include hiking, biking, and immersive cultural experiences. This appeals to a broad range of interests. Yes the choices can be overwhelming of which ship, stateroom, and itinerary you should pick, but Markwood Magic will help pair you with the perfect river cruise for you and your travel party by schedule a consultation here.

Myth 2: River Cruises Are Boring

Another myth is that river cruises lack excitement and variety. In reality, river cruises offer a diverse range of destinations and activities.  The entertainment onboard is really fun. My favorite is a tie between Tauck's MS Grace in Amsterdam and Emerald Luna in Budapest. On land, river cruises dock in a new town or city almost every day. It makes it easy seeing so many cultures and sites and gives plenty of  opportunity for exploration. And yes, there are some ports where you can dock overnight to explore the cities come to life after sunset. A river cruise is more than a floating hotel though. There are guided tours of everything from historic landmarks and visits to local markets to wine tastings and culinary experiences like wine in a cave or truffle hunting. There is something new and exciting to do. Plus, the intimate setting of a river cruise allows for unique cultural interactions and a deeper connection with the destination.

Myth 3: River Cruises Are Expensive

The perception that river cruises are prohibitively expensive is another common myth. Hear me out. The initial price may seem higher compared to some ocean cruises. However, river cruises often provide excellent value for money. It also depends on what level of luxury you are looking for. Many river cruise packages include accommodations, meals, drinks, shore excursions, and even Wi-Fi, meaning you won’t face unexpected expenses. When you consider the high level of service, the quality of the amenities, and the inclusion of various activities, river cruising becomes a cost-effective way to travel.

Myth 4: River Cruises Offer Limited Dining Options

Some travelers worry that river cruises may lack diverse dining options with fewer restaurant options compared to ocean cruises. However, most river cruise lines pride themselves on their culinary offerings, providing gourmet meals that showcase local cuisine and ingredients. Many ships feature multiple dining venues, from elegant main dining rooms to casual cafes and al fresco options. I should also note that although the dining room may be elegant there is no need for formal attire. Additionally, river cruises often include excursions to local restaurants and food markets, allowing guests to sample regional specialties and gain a deeper appreciation for the local culture.

Myth 5: River Cruises Are Too Slow-Paced

The notion that river cruises are too slow-paced for active travelers is simply not true. River cruises offer a range of activities that cater to varying levels of fitness and interest. Many cruises provide opportunities for active excursions such as biking tours, hiking adventures, and even kayaking. For those who prefer a more relaxed pace, there are plenty of leisurely activities like scenic deck lounging, spa treatments, and onboard entertainment. This flexibility allows couples, friend groups, and families to tailor their experience to match their desired pace.

Myth 6: River Cruises Lack Personal Space

Concerns about personal space on river cruises are understandable, but modern river cruise ships are designed with comfort and privacy in mind. The largest river cruise ship in Europe only holds 190 guests. Most have about 160 guest onboard in Europe. Most cabins are feature balconies allowing guests to enjoy stunning views from the comfort of their rooms. As a side note the Douro river will have the most beautiful views. Additionally, the smaller size of river cruise ships creates a more intimate and less crowded environment compared to larger ocean liners. Bonus tip: there are a few ships on the Daube that are almost double the size of traditional river cruise ships that offer more space. That includes the Riverside Mozart which I have sailed on.

Myth 7: River Cruises Are Only In Europe

This couldn't be further from the truth. While most first time river cruisers travel in Europe, you can find river cruises in Africa, Columbia, the Middle East, Asia, and even here in the United States.
