During my recent Danube River cruise, I embarked on a private ebike excursion through the heart of the Austrian Wachau Valley. Traveling between Melk and Durnstein, this route is arguably the most beautiful stretch of the entire river. Pictures don’t do it justice and I wished I had my GoPro with me so you could see it. While I completed this tour while sailing with Riverside Luxury Cruises on the Riverside Mozart, this iconic path is a staple for many premium cruise lines. It offers a unique perspective of the Austrian countryside that you simply cannot see from the deck of a ship. It was my husband and myself on the tour plus the local bike guide and one of the wellness coordinators from Riverside. We alternated between riding along the Danube River and through small villages. It was truly wonderful.

What makes the Wachau Valley so special: The geography of a microclimate
The Wachau Valley is a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its dramatic landscapes. You have the mountains on both sides and the Danube River in the middle. Did you know that because of the mountain and the spring water that come from there, the cities and towns provide free unfiltered water for residents and tourists? This specific topography and elevation creates a series of microclimates that dictate the local agriculture. At the start of the e-bike tour in Melk, the air and soil are perfect for delicious apricot orchards. As you bike Melk toward Durnstein, the landscape shifts visibly into steep, sun drenched vineyards. This transition is not just beautiful to look at but also educational. You can see firsthand how the elevation and proximity to the water influence the growth of the world famous Gruner Veltliner grapes. You can read more about Microclimates and how it affects grape production here.

Local Food in Aggsbach Markt
One of the best ways to learn about a region is through its food. During the e-bike tour, we stopped at a small historic town called Aggsbach Markt. This town is known for the Aggstein Castle Ruins and the Venus of Willendorf Museum (more on that in a bit). At Restaurant Genussterrasse we sat outside and watched a few river cruise ships slowly pass us. We had the most delicious apricot pastry cake called Marillenkuchen. The timing was fantastic as the apricots were at their peak freshness. They were picked locally from the apricot groves. We each had two of them and that was plenty for lunch and to gave us enough energy for the rest of our e-bike tour.
Venus of Willendorf
Between Aggsbach Markt and Willendorf is the Venus of Willendorf. She which was discovered here in 1908 and considered good luck and as a symbol of Fertility. . The original is 30,000 years old and preserved at the Natural History Museum in Vienna, Austria in the Venus Cabinet. Venus of Willendorf was thought to have originated in Italy and traveled over 450 miles to where it was found in Willendorf, Austria. You can read more about this faceless statue here.

The Legend of the Seven Stone Rabbits
One of the more amusing stops is the Church of St. Michael. When you look at the roof of the church you will see seven stones rabbits. Local legend states that during a snow storm the rabbits hopped to the top of the roof. When the snow melted away the rabbits were left behind and turned to stone. You will see many bike tour groups stop here. This story has become so famous that you can even find a humorous souvenir in Dürnstein called Rabbit Shit, which is actually delicious chocolate covered apricot pearls marketed to tourists with a sense of humor. If you have teens or pre-teens back at home, this is a really fun gift to bring back for them.

Professional Logistics for the Active Traveler
Using an e-bike makes this journey accessible for varying fitness levels, but there are a few practical things to keep in mind. Safety is a priority on these paths, and you are not permitted to hold your phone while riding. I recommend bringing a secure backpack for your devices so you can stay focused on the path. The e-bike makes it a bit easier to travel versus a traditional, ensuring you have plenty of time to explore the hidden corners of the valley away from the typical tourist crowds.
