The Beginner Dilemma
When I have my initial consultation call with travelers where we begin planning their first journey in the heart of Europe, they want to see multiple countries and cities but often wonder about how logistics work with all their luggage. River cruising solves that problem completely and is my favorite way to explore Europe. If you are trying to decide where to start your European journey, the Danube River is the top choice for first time river cruisers. Here is why the Danube remains the best choice for your inaugural river cruise voyage.
Â
Smooth Sailing
The Danube River is incredibly calm. On both Danube River cruises I have been on I could not feel the rocking on the ship that you can sometimes get on ocean cruises. This is because the Danube river does not have tidal currents and ocean swells. It is a stable and very relaxing environment where the scenic landscapes pass by and you can watch the river for hours on end.

From Imperial Cities to Fairytale Vineyards
Budapest: Budapest is hands down my favorite city in Europe. It is also where more Danube River Cruises begin or end their journey. One of the most magical experiences is after dinner, walking to the top deck of the river cruise ship and gliding past the beautiful Parliament Building that is fully illuminated. It’s hard to describe in words, but it makes your heart smile and brings joy. Budapest has so much to offer. Read my complete guide to Budapest. I mentioned that I have cruised on the Danube River twice. I have extended my stay at three different resorts, and by far the 5-star Matild Palace was the most luxurious and my favorite of the three.
Vienna: Vienna is a city you must visit at least once. It is known for royalty with the Habsburg family as well as music. You get chills from listening to the talented musicians play pieces from Mozart, Beethoven, and more. Explore my curated Danube music excursions guide. Walking into the Schönbrunn Palace is like nothing I have seen before.  I loved walking in the gardens and exploring inside the palace.
The Wachau Valley: For active cruise travelers, you are going to love this. I took an ebike excursion from Melk to Dürnstein and would do it again in a heartbeat. You transition from apricot orchards to vineyards and the views are outstanding. Â
Regensburg: Regensburg is a short train ride from Munich. One of the river cruises I went on started here and it is a charming medieval town. The city layout remains fairly unchanged since the 13th century, and you can still see several Roman remains in the arches and walls of the buildings.

Docking in the Heart of the Action
On the Danube, ships often dock right along the riverbanks near the center of the historical towns. This is a huge advantage. That means no long bus transfers or complicated transit systems. You literally step off the ship and start exploring. Now, in full transparency not every river cruise line does dock in the center of the city, but I know which lines have the best docking locations.
The Markwood Magic Advantage
So now that you know a little bit more about the Danube River, how do you know which river cruise line is the best for you? This is one of my favorite parts about my job as a Travel Advisor. I match not only the river and itinerary, but also which line and cabin category is perfect for cruise travelers. River cruise lines like AmaWaterways, Avalon, Tauck, and Viking all have their own personality.  Navigating the nuances of premium river providers requires firsthand industry insight. While a line like Viking offers an exceptional adult only cultural focus, a luxury brand like Tauck might better serve travelers seeking exclusive access that cannot be obtained elsewhere. My role as your travel consultant is to leverage my  in person trainings on the river cruise ships to make sure you have the vacation that is perfect for you and your traveling party.
