Royal Caribbean’s Star of the Seas shares the title of the largest cruise ship sailing in the world. She is part of the Icon class of ships along with Hero of the Seas, Legend of the Seas, and Icon of the Seas. I have cruised onboard Star of the Seas twice. She has 2805 cabins onboard.
While there are several different cabin categories, the one I get asked about the most is the difference between an infinite ocean view balcony and a standard ocean view balcony. You can read a bit more about infinite balconies across the ocean and river cruise ships here.
Â
Do the standard ocean view balcony cabins and infinite ocean view balcony cabins face the ocean?
Yes, both of these specific cabin category types directly face the ocean. This is important to note because there are also balconies onboard Star of the Seas that face the interior of the ship, meaning they face toward the Surfside Neighborhood or Central Park, which happens to be one of my favorite places to hang out onboard and relax.

Which is the better cabin to stay in? An ocean view balcony cabin or an infinite balcony cabin?
I am so glad you asked this question because this is another one I get all the time. The answer is that it truly depends on your travel style. I personally like the infinite balcony better and use that area as my changing room and where to read in the morning before the rest of my family wakes up. However, that does not mean it is the right cabin type for you. Part of my job as a Marietta based travel agent to make sure that I not only find the right cruise line, ship, and itinerary, but to also make sure I match you with the perfect cabin type for your travel party. Â
Are the bathrooms the same size in an ocean view balcony cabin and in an infinite ocean view balcony cabin?
Yes, the bathrooms are the same size for these cabin categories.
Â
Is there a separate balcony with an ocean view balcony and infinite ocean view balcony?
The ocean view balcony has a separate balcony. The infinite ocean view balcony has a flexible area within the cabin itself that acts as a balcony when the top half of the floor to ceiling window is rolled down, or becomes a larger extended living area when the window is rolled up.
Do the balconies close off from the rest of the cabin in an ocean view balcony and infinite ocean view balcony?
The answer is yes and no. Let me explain. In the traditional ocean view balcony cabin, there is a heavy sliding glass door that you open to step outside. In the infinite ocean view the balcony area is inside the cabin. There is a curtain you can close to section that area off from the rest of the room. I loved using that separated area to get dressed or read a book while my family was still sleeping. If you have younger children it is the perfect place for a pack-in-play.
Â
Are there connecting cabins available with an infinite ocean view balcony or an ocean view balcony?
Yes, both cabin types have connecting staterooms. As a quick self-brag, I am really good at finding those adjoining connecting cabins for my travelers . You can put time on my calendar here to start planning your next cruise vacation.
Â

Will the a/c in the cabin turn off when I use the balcony in an ocean view balcony or an infinite ocean view balcony?
When the sliding glass door is open in an ocean view balcony the air conditioning will automatically turn off. Similarly, when the window is rolled down in the infinite ocean view, the air conditioning will also turn off.
Â
Can you block the light from the sun in an ocean view balcony or an infinite ocean view balcony?
Yes. With the infinite ocean view balcony, there is a sheer sun screen if you just want light coverage, and a heavier blackout curtain to block the sun completely when you want to take a midday nap or sleep deeply at night. The regular ocean view balcony also features heavy curtains over the sliding glass door.
