There is a reason Iceland is a bucket list destination for many travelers, especially if you love nature and her beautiful landscapes. Here you can see geothermal lagoons, volcanic beaches, glaciers, ice tunnels, and more. However, everything is spread out and many iconic sites are more that a day’s drive from Reykjavík. Unlike other countries in Europe, Iceland does not have a public rail system that makes it easy to get from one destination to the next without a car. That begs the question, you should rent a car in Iceland. This article will explore of renting a car is the right option for your traveling party.

Why You Should Rent a Car

Renting a car can be more economical than other ways to explore Iceland.

With both renting a car and hiring private driver you are in charge of how long you stay at each destination. There is a LOT of flexibility and the option to make more unscheduled stops. The flexibility is nice so you can stay at the waterfall a little longer, go to the less touristy hidden gems, and truly be on you own schedule. Most likely you will dive around Ring Road (Route 1) and/or Golden Circle. Right Route is a 825 mile highway that circles the entire island, while the Golden Circle is a shorter - 186 miles.  Both are well marked and can be full of gorgeous scenery. You can plan your days around weather conditions, photography light, or simply your mood. And honestly? Some of Iceland’s best memories come from the moments that were not scheduled.

Why You Should Reconsider Renting a Car

If you are only staying a few days in Reykjavik and plan to do small group day tours from the city, then you do not need a rental car.

When you rent a car, you and/or your traveling party are responsible for all the driving. Depending on the time of year you are going, roads could be closed and driving conditions could be different in Iceland compared to driving in your home time.

You want somebody else who is more familiar with the landscape to do the driving for you so you can relax more on your hard earned vacation. Plus a private driver might have some hidden gems and information to share with you along your journey.

Other Options For Travel in Iceland

Besides hiring a private driver or renting a car for your travel party, you can also do a small group tour or book an expedition cruise that travels around Iceland. All these options will have less stress as you are not the one doing the driving.  Yes, those are a lot of options to choose from, but Markwood Magic can help determine which option is right for your travel party.
