Iceland Cruise vs. Land Tour, Which Is Better?

When planning a bucket list trip to Iceland, one of the most frequent questions clients ask me is whether it is better to explore the island on a land tour, an ocean cruise, or a combination of both.
I choose a combination for my trip to Iceland in July. I paired seven nights of an Iceland Intensive cruise onboard Celebrity Silhouette with three nights of land-only Iceland. If my scheduled allowed, I could have easily spent another two to three nights in Iceland.
How Much Time Do You Have for an Iceland Vacation
The first factor to consider is your total trip duration. you need to ask yourself is how much time can you be away from your home? If you have more than a week, it will take about nine to ten nights to drive the ring road around Iceland or seven nights cruising. If you have less than a week, then a land-only trip is the better way to go. For reference, most of the land only trips I plan to Iceland are 6 nights and explore both the South Coash and Golden Circle. Northern Lights in Iceland: Are They Better by Land or Sea
If seeing the Northern Lights is your primary goal to visit Iceland, then optimal time to visit Iceland is late September – March. A land stay is best for aurora hunting. Do note that the colder winter months are great for viewing as there are longer nights due to early sunsets. The winder months also bring snow and the potential for road closures. Travel Logistics: Unpacking Once Verses Moving Hotels in Iceland
The main advantage of an ocean cruise is the convenience of unpacking once. Your floating hotel moves with you across Iceland while you enjoy elevated amenities like an upgrade AquaClass stateroom. When you visit Iceland via land, whether that be a small group or independent travel you have to pack and unpack every 1-3 days to get to your next destination. Both ways are great, but not for everyone.
Do Iceland Cruise Excursions Cover the Main Attractions
The short answer is yes. Cruising around Iceland still allows you to explore famous landmarks like the Silfra Fissure in the Golden Circle or the Katla Ice Cave on the South Coast, either via port excursions or pre and post cruise land extensions. Port stops include Goðafoss near Akureyri and the breathtaking Dynjandi waterfall near Ísafjörður (which I highlighted in my article on 7 Firsts in Iceland). Sailing also offers panoramic views of coastal fjords directly from the ship.
Cost Comparison: Iceland Land Vacations Versus Cruises
When you cruise your costs are largely fixed upfront. All the meals and snacks are already included. Depending on your cruise line and package, drinks may also be included. On an independent land trip, meals are an out-of-pocket expense, though boutique hotels usually include morning breakfast. On guided group tours, meal inclusions vary by operator.
Iceland is one of the most stunning countries I have visited, but local dining costs are noticeable high similar to Los Angeles or Miami. However the prices for food are high. Breakfast for two in Reykjavik costs ~$50. The food is absolutely fantastic, but prices are high as most items are imported.
Traveling Between Regions and Cities in Iceland
When you travel by ship, moving between destinations it couldn’t be easier . All you have to do is relax, eat dinner, and enjoy the entertainment on the ship. While you are sleeping the ship will move continue sailing towards the next port of call. Driving by land offers flexibility to pause at roadside viewpoints, but it can be tiring driving for hours.
Choose a Land Tour if: You want full self drive flexibility, more authentic food, prefer rural boutique lodges, have less than seven days, or want to experience the Northern Lights.
Choose an Ocean Cruise if: You prefer refined comfort, zero driving stress, elevated dining, panoramic fjord views, and exploring multiple regions without repacking.
