You already know how to pack for an ocean cruise and maybe even on a land journey in Europe, but as a first time Danube river cruiser, packing is different. I have personally cruised on the Danube River twice, once in the middle of summer and once in late fall in the colder weather. They were on two completely different river cruise lines. One was on board Riverside Luxury Cruises, an ultra luxury line with 5 star dining experiences, and the other was with Emerald Cruises, a contemporary premium line with exceptional customer service.
This packing guide is not just about checking the boxes to make sure you pack everything, it is about matching the effortless and sophisticated lifestyle of river cruise travel so you never feel over or under dressed while on the ship or exploring the beautiful European ports of call.

The Footwear Strategy: Conquering the Cobblestones

Out of all the things to pack, having the right footwear is going to be the most important thing when you are in Europe. One of the things that makes Europe so special is that you can walk back in time and see Roman ruins, medieval villages, and more. Because of that, many of the streets are made of cobblestones and not pavement. This makes the city more authentic and keeps its charm. However, it can make the ground more uneven. I strongly suggest one pair of chic comfortable sneakers that support your foot. I like wearing Brooks but pack whichever premium brand keeps your feet happy. There are a lot of wonderful walking tours you will take during your Danube River cruise, so wearing the right footwear is very important. While many Americans opt for bright and/or colorful sneakers, more Europeans prefer a simpler look. To blend in seamlessly, I suggest packing a white sneaker if possible.
You also want a pair of stylish shoes for evening on board. There are no formal nights like you may be used to on the ocean cruises, but you can wear something a step up from a sneaker.
Daytime Exploration: Elevated Casual Layers
Europeans dress "smart casual." They favor more sophisticated neutrals and muted colors. You want to look put together for city walking tours, wine tastings, and farm visits, and local eateries while staying comfortable.
Summer
Even in the peak summer, layering can be important. I like to bring a sun shawl that blocks the UV rays with me during my summer European travels. In the evening, or during special indoor events like a private classical concert in Vienna, that same shawl doubles as a beautiful layer to keep comfortable in the air conditioning. High quality linen becomes your best friend in the summer heat. It not only looks nice but is a cooler fabric. A nice khaki linen skirt will go with any solid top and white pair of sneakers. Pro trip: Shop at some of the local boutiques in Europe. Not only will you dress like a European, but it will also be a great souvenir to bring home. In the larger cities, make sure you shop away from the tourist areas and more where the locals are living.
Fall and Spring
Layering becomes even more important on the Danube River when you cruise in Spring and Fall. I brought a heavy jacket and a light jacket with me as well as a shawl so I could always be comfortable no matter what the weather was like.
The Daytime Wardrobe Capsule:
Mix and Match basics: Breathable tops, tailored pants, dark denim, and linen skirts.
Outerwear: A waterproof jacket and a shawl with built in UV protection. In the Fall and Winter, bring a heavy jacket as well as hats and gloves.
Deck Wear: A premium cashmere wrap or light sweater for breezy mornings or evenings on the top deck.
Security: A stylish yet secure crossbody bag or daypack with zippers.
Evening On Board: Smart Casual vs Boutique Luxury
River cruising is very different when it comes to what to wear in the evening compared to ocean cruising. There is no need to bring a tux rental and sequined gown. The atmosphere is more relaxed. Yes, even when you have a butler for your cabin. This does not take away from the service and luxury on board. Riverside had the best food I have ever had on vacation anywhere in the world.
The Outfit Formula:
For Women: Elegant maxi dresses, tailored jumpsuits, or nice slacks paired with a blouse. You should still feel comfortable.
For Men: Collared shirts, polos, and chinos. No jackets or ties are required. However, a jacket or sport coat is perfect for the private classical concert in Vienna or Budapest.
Stealth Essentials: The Things Most People Forget When Packing
A Swimsuit: Essential for Emerald’s or Riverside’s gorgeous indoor pool or AmaWaterways outdoor heated pool. Full disclosure, not every river cruise line has a pool on board which is exactly why I wrote a dedicated guide comparing river cruise ship pools.
Local Currency: While credit cards are accepted having local currency is crucial for tipping local guides or even using public restrooms in historic squares. While most countries use the Euros, not all do. For example, Hungary uses the Hungarian Forint.
A Portable Power Bank: For keeping smartphones charged during long, photo and video heavy days, especially in Vienna and Budapest. Make sure you follow the airline’s rules about which type of power banks you are able to bring on the plane with you. Pro tip: At the end of each day make sure your photos are back up and while you are on your trip go ahead and organize the photos into different folders. Your future self will thank you immensely when you return home to show your friends!
Laundry
You can have your clothes washed while you are on a river cruise. Some river cruise lines have self service laundry and others offers laundry services. Packing light is easy when you plan to rewear your outfits. As a bonus that leaves more room in your suitcase for souvenirs.
