Top Phrases For Traveling in Portugal

 Knowing a few of the key phases when you travel can go a long way with the locals in Portugal. While you will find English is widely used, it is nice to show effort and speak their language. Just a note: If you need to have longer communications you can use an app like Google Translate Here are a few common phrases in Portuguese.


Basic Politeness

  • HelloOlá (oh-LAH)

  • Goodbye – Adeus (ah-DEH-oosh)

  • Good morning – Bom dia (bohm DEE-ah)

  • Good afternoon – Boa tarde (BOH-ah TAR-deh)

  • Good evening / night – Boa noite (BOH-ah NOY-tuh)

  • PleasePor favor (poor fah-VOHR)

  • Thank you –

    • Obrigada (oh-bree-GAH-dah) – women

    • Obrigado (oh-bree-GAH-doo) – men

  • You're welcome – De nada (deh NAH-dah)

  • Excuse me / Sorry – Desculpe (dehsh-KOOL-peh)

 

Social Phrases

  • How are you? – Como está? (KOH-moo esh-TAH?)

  • I'm good, thank you – Estou bem, obrigada/o (esh-TOH beng, oh-bree-GAH-dah/do)

  • Nice to meet you – Muito prazer (MOO-ee-toh prah-ZEHR)

  • Cheers!Saúde! (sah-OO-deh)

 

Dining & Wine Tasting

  • I would like... – Queria... (keh-REE-ah)

  • More wine, please – Mais vinho, por favor (maish VEEN-yoo poor fah-VOHR)

  • I am finished – Já terminei (zha ter-mee-NAY)

  • It was delicious – Estava delicioso (esh-TAH-vah deh-lee-see-OH-zoo)

  • The bill, please – A conta, por favor (ah KOHN-tah poor fah-VOHR)

  • Where is the bathroom? – Onde fica a casa de banho? (OHN-deh FEE-kah ah KAH-zah deh BAH-nyoo)
